At WINNING STRIDES we emphasize harmony between horse & human

ABOUT US

Owners Laurie Messner and Randy Patton began Winning Strides in 2000 with the philosophy that horses thrive in a herd environment. They designed their facility so that each field encompasses 40 acre pastures where the horses graze freely. Laurie believed in developing a multi discipline equine community, built on the solid foundation of classical horsemanship with harmony between horse and human. Over the years the programs have grown to include popular summer camps; and riding programs from beginner to accomplished riders in Western and English. In 2009, the Journeys Therapeutic Riding Society evolved encompassing Equine Assisted Learning – completing our diverse equine community. The dedicated team at Winning Strides continues to provide exceptional service for each owner and rider to succeed. Laurie and Randy live their mission daily to provide you with safe, effective and dynamic horsemanship so you can enjoy a lifetime of equine opportunities.

Laurie Messner

Laurie Messner was introduced to horses at a young age through a family horse boarding business. She was fortunate to receive her first formal instruction from a number of legendary horse professionals. Her childhood love of riding blossomed into a summer job and graduated into a position working and showing Quarter Horses for a leading breeder. Laurie’s formative years also included time in the United States, immersed in the cutting horse industry. During these years, she was exposed to natural horsemanship founders, whose methodologies continue to inspire her today.

After returning to Canada to settle in Nanton, Alberta, Laurie’s life with horses ebbed and flowed, before she was officially drawn back into a life with horses by those around her that recognized her relentless passion. Laurie began her teaching career while boarding at a local stable and she was encouraged to teach and through teaching riding, discovered a love for working with children. She was encouraged to go out on her own and alongside her husband Randy, they opened Winning Strides, a facility offering boarding, riding lessons and more.

Laurie’s genuine love for horses and seeing people gain skill and confidence is her guiding light.  A dream was realized combining Laurie’s broad ranging experiences. Journeys Therapeutic Riding Society was founded and is now an established riding program for special needs children and adults. It continues to be an integral part of the inclusive, warm and welcoming feel that Winning Strides provides.

The year 2020 marked Laurie’s third decade in the industry, and was pivotal for many reasons. It brought with it numerous challenges, but also opportunity for Laurie to refocus her horsemanship and business goals. Just as it began, Winning Strides has refined its purpose and is returning to a facility whose primary focus is to provide the utmost care and respect for each and every horse. Winning Strides hosts clinics and seminars with horse professionals that support & complement its vision.

Having stepped back into the show ring with success, Laurie is full of optimism for the future. She has found her niche in Open Horse Showing, Ranch Horse Versatility and Weanling Challenges. Additionally, she offers lessons to those who require support and encouragement reach their goals with their horses. Laurie recognizes that her diverse experience has led her down many different paths, but each is undeniably intertwined with the other. Her rich background and breadth of knowledge always provides a clear route to follow, inspiring her to carry on working with horses and in helping people.
