Top 10 Frequently Asked Questions

How old do you have to be to ride?  We start our programs for riders ages 8 and older

How old is too old to ride? you’re never too old until you think you are!

What equipment do I need? All riders need a helmet, long pants (jeans not sweat pants)  and riding boots with a heel. Loafers, sneakers and jogging shoes are not acceptable. You can borrow boots and helmets from our program

What should I expect in my first lesson? You will start with an orientation, safety and an evaluation of your skills.  Basically we get to know you, and you get to know our program’s whys and hows.

How long is a lesson? The actual lesson is one hour – but prepare to be at your lesson at least fifteen minutes before and half an hour after the class. A lot of your horsemanship is developed on the ground before and after the ride – including safety (human error leads to many accidents – that is why we teach safe horsemanship), care, tacking and untacking.  We like to brag that no gym membership is needed once you are involved with horses!

Do you offer private lessons?  We only provide private lessons to evaluate a rider or for a limited time to assess rider’s skills and/or horse proficiency.

Are parents required to stay?  No, parents are not required to stay however, you are welcome to watch. If staying please speak to your instructor if you have any questions about barn rules.

What style of riding do you  teach? Our program teaches the balanced seat in both Western and English to prepare you for any equestrian pursuits you want to participate in.

Will I have to participate in horse shows? Nope – if it is not your goal it is not our goal to get you there. Some of our students do ride at shows. Shows are an excellent way to focus on riding skills – and we do have a show program if this is your goal.

For every rider, there is a horse

A program designed to enhance the mind, body and spirit of children, youth and adults with physical disabilities, special needs, emotional and/or learning needs. Instructors provide a safe, supervised riding experience for the students developing unique relationships with the horses leading to increased confidence, independence and self-esteem.

Our Journeys programs runs spring and fall on Tuesdays. We are a registered charity and love to have riders and interested volunteers contact us.
